How to Install an Amplifier

Car amplifiers are not that hard to install especially when the budget is tight and you want a simple yet personal touch on them. Well, unless you are installing subwoofers, the best option is to put it under the passenger’s seat or at the trunk.

Of course, wires are necessary and choosing between this and that also becomes a problem when even the salesman at your favorite car shop does not know a thing. Prepare a ground cable approximately three feet with the same thickness as the power wires earlier. Buy an RCA signal cable; connect it from your head unit to your amplifier. Prepare another thin wire, approximately 20 to 25 gauges and connect it as you’ve done with the RCA signal cable (from head unit to amplifier). At least twelve feet with 16-gauge wire per speaker is enough for the speaker wires. Remember to measure the distance every now and then before cutting the wires, you don’t want to waste your wires. They can be costly at times.

Have a tool box ready with screwdrivers, wire cutters, pliers, masking tapes, and a marker for labeling which wire is which, and crimp-o o-ring ends. Installing the amplifier to the main speakers will need two extras of crimp-on female spade connectors per speaker.

Take of the dash board. (Have a manual ready or an instructional guide on how to remove it to be sure that when you return them, the wires won’t be a mess.)

Always disconnect the ground cable from the battery. With the positive end of the thick power cable, connect it to the positive terminal of the car’s battery. Place an o-ring between, and place the fuse in its holder.

Stretch your power cable to your amplifier, but watch out not to put it close to the signal and speaker wires. Fasten it to a metal bolt with the o-ring tightly.

Remove the main unit, stretch both the signal and remote wires to the amplifier, and connect the RCA connectors and the remote on wire. Stretch the 16-gauge wire from each of the speakers to the amplifier. Label the wires. At the end of each wire, strip an approximately ¼ to ½ inch off. Crimp on the female spade connectors using your pliers and connect the spade connectors, positive for positive and negative for negative.

Plug everything to the amplifier. Reconnect the car’s negative cable to the car battery and run the system. Take note that all wires are secured and no exposed wires hanging to have that solid surround sound.
